Applications & Industries

Automotive

There are countless applications in automotive assembly that utilize pressure-sensitive adhesives. Some applications involve lamination strictly for aesthetic purposes while other bonding applications such as brake pad mounting deal directly with automotive safety. And while some adhesive products will be stripped away and discarded after processing, otherpressure-sensitive materials serve an important function as an integral part of an automotive component. No matter how your application benefits from using pressure-sensitive adhesives, they can often provide an effective and economical solution to mounting, cushioning and protecting parts and materials in the automotive industry.

Dielectric Polymers has been selling acrylic transfer adhesives, silicone masking tapes and custom laminations to automotive primary- and secondary-tier suppliers for almost ten years. Adhesive tapes such as the NT-200APS Series are ideal for automotive applications. Since this acrylic adhesive system is highly cross linked, it does not emit vapors on the windshield and other interior parts. Not only do these products pass the non-fogging test, they are constructed with a firm adhesive system for easy die cutting and provide permanent adhesion at elevated temperatures. These benefits, in addition to high clarity, are critical in instrument cluster applications to prevent separation of adhesive-backed appliques from light pipes.

Noise control in automotive systems provides many areas for adhesive product use. Between window glass and dashboard, in door hinges and door jambs, in vent and inner trunk assemblies and in the rear cargo and glove compartments are a few places where sound abatement materials can eliminate squeaks, rattles and other types of noise. NT-240BF, a four mil acrylic adhesive cast on black nylon flock, is an effective anti-squeak material between dissimilar substrates.

Automotive masking is another area that utilizes pressure-sensitive tapes. Whether your application involves masking injection molded bumpers, cladding or other components, Dielectric Polymers polyester/silicone masking tapes provide fine line definition on painted parts and clean tape removal.

Many automotive interior applications benefit from the use of heat activated dry films that offer a variety of unique attributes in addition to adhesion properties. In automotive headliners, carpet and trim mounting, gaskets, water dams and package trays, these high performance films offer strong bonds, flex strength and formability. Heat activated films provide excellent adhesion to urethane foam in seating applications as well as slip surface characteristics, which aid processing during manufacturing. In headliner lamination, these dry adhesive films bond well to urethane foam, fiberglass, polyester, paperboard and nonwovens while providing a barrier to liquid urethanes and high temperature resistance.

Adhesives play a significant role in automotive production, from preparation of various parts to component assembly. At Dielectric Polymers, our experience and commitment to engineering quality adhesive tapes and films will continue to act as a driving force for future innovation in the automotive industry.
